This winter Harvard switched over to an e-mail system based on Microsoft Exchange. Among its many remarkable deficiencies is one particularly entertaining bug: it will occasionally pick a message and simply refuse to remember that it has been marked as read. If I read it (or otherwise mark it as read), it will be restored to New within 10 minutes, and there is nothing to be done about it except to wait. The message generally converts to Read after about a week, and then in another month or so the problem will reoccur with a new message.
This month’s zombie e-mail takes the cake, though, by pure coincidence. From the spam-happy Democratic fundraising machine, its title reads
